SMF Recruitment for Investment Managers and Hedge Funds
SMF Capital recruits Senior Managers for investment managers, hedge funds, private markets managers and other MIFIDPRU investment firms. We place chief executives and managing partners, compliance officers and MLROs, risk and finance leaders, and independent board members, in permanent, interim and fractional roles.
Every search builds in the regulator’s fit and proper assessment from the first conversation, and every search is led personally by Adrian Lawrence FCA.
The Investment Management SMF Market
Investment managers, hedge funds, private equity managers and other MIFIDPRU investment firms range from global businesses with hundreds of staff to specialist boutiques run by a handful of partners. Most are Core firms under the Senior Managers and Certification Regime. The largest can meet the Enhanced thresholds, bringing a full set of board and executive Senior Manager Functions.
Senior Manager hiring in this sector has particular features. Many firms are structured as limited liability partnerships, with partners holding Senior Manager Functions. Prudential regulation under the MIFIDPRU sourcebook makes finance and risk leadership central to how the FCA judges the firm. And the candidate pool is shaped by the global nature of the industry, with strong candidates often weighing UK roles against opportunities elsewhere.
Senior Manager Functions at Investment Firms
Depending on its structure and tier, an investment firm’s Senior Manager Functions typically include:
- the SMF1 Chief Executive and SMF3 executive directors
- SMF27 Partner, for LLPs, where partners with significant responsibility hold the function
- SMF16 Compliance Oversight and SMF17 Money Laundering Reporting
- at Enhanced firms, additional functions including the SMF4 Chief Risk, Chief Finance and SMF24 Chief Operations functions, the Chair and committee chairs.
Our guide to which SMFs apply at each firm tier explains how the tiers work for investment firms.
Where the FCA Focuses
Prudential Risk and the ICARA
MIFIDPRU firms must run an Internal Capital Adequacy and Risk Assessment, identifying the harms their business could cause and holding enough capital and liquidity to cover them. The FCA expects the governing body to own it. That places real demands on finance and risk leadership, which is why we test candidates’ prudential knowledge closely at every stage.
Conflicts of Interest and Market Conduct
Investment firms must manage conflicts between their own interests and their clients’, and between clients. Hedge funds and trading firms also face market abuse and best execution obligations. Compliance leaders need genuine investment and trading experience to oversee these areas credibly.
Retail Outcomes and the Consumer Duty
Firms with retail clients or retail distribution face the Consumer Duty, including fair value assessments of funds and services. Senior Managers need to be able to evidence outcomes across the distribution chain.
Operational Resilience and Outsourcing
Many investment firms rely heavily on third-party administrators, custodians and technology providers. The FCA expects firms to understand and oversee these dependencies, which is often where the Chief Operations function earns its keep.
How We Run Investment Management SMF Searches
Every search starts from the Statement of Responsibilities the new Senior Manager will sign and any Prescribed Responsibilities they’ll carry. We build the specification around that accountability rather than a job title, then approach candidates directly and in confidence. Most of the strongest candidates aren’t actively looking, and many already hold approvals at competing firms.
Before anyone reaches your shortlist, we test them against the fit and proper test: prior approvals, regulatory history, directorships and financial soundness. We start regulatory references early, because late references are one of the most common causes of delay. For investment firm roles, we test candidates’ understanding of prudential requirements, conflicts and market conduct, depending on the function.
Adrian Lawrence FCA interviews every shortlisted candidate personally, and we stay involved until your new Senior Manager is approved and in post. For a realistic view of the stages, see how long an SMF appointment actually takes, and for the full service, our SMF recruitment services page.
The Senior Roles We Recruit
Chief Executives and Managing Partners
We recruit chief executives and managing partners who can combine investment credibility with firm leadership, governance and regulatory engagement, including for firms moving from founder leadership to an institutional structure.
Chief Compliance Officers and MLROs
We place compliance leaders with direct experience in asset management, hedge funds or private markets: conflicts, market abuse surveillance, financial promotions, fund distribution and regulatory reporting. For smaller firms, a fractional compliance officer is often the proportionate answer.
Chief Risk Officers and Heads of Risk
Risk leadership sits at the heart of the ICARA. We recruit risk leaders who can challenge the assessment of harms and stress scenarios, not just produce the numbers. At Enhanced firms, this can be an SMF4 appointment.
Finance Leaders
MIFIDPRU finance roles need prudential expertise: own funds requirements, K-factors, liquidity and wind-down planning. Our sister practice FD Capital runs SMF2 regulated CFO searches, including fractional finance directors for smaller firms, and we work together where the role carries a Senior Manager Function.
Chief Operating Officers
For firms with complex outsourcing and technology, we recruit chief operating officers who understand operational resilience and third-party oversight, including SMF24 holders at Enhanced firms.
Independent Chairs and Non-Executives
Independent board members with prudential and investment experience strengthen the challenge of the ICARA and conflicts management, and reassure institutional investors.
Remuneration and Senior Manager Appointments
Pay in investment management often includes significant variable remuneration, carried interest or partnership profit shares. For Senior Managers at larger firms, remuneration rules may require deferral and performance adjustment of variable pay. Candidates moving between firms will want to understand how unvested awards from their current employer will be treated, and firms need to plan buy-outs carefully. We discuss these points early so that offers don’t fail at the final stage.
Hiring Challenges in Investment Management
- A global candidate pool, with strong candidates weighing UK roles against offers from other financial centres.
- Partnership structures, where Senior Manager appointments interact with partnership economics and admission.
- Growth across thresholds, from small and non-interconnected status to non-SNI and potentially Enhanced, each raising expectations. Our multi-SMF team build service helps plan ahead.
- Key person dependency in boutiques where one person holds several functions and the ICARA knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you recruit for hedge funds and private equity managers?
Yes. We recruit Senior Managers across long-only managers, hedge funds, private markets managers, wealth platforms and other MIFIDPRU investment firms.
Can a partner in an LLP hold a Senior Manager Function?
Yes. SMF27 Partner applies to partners in LLPs with significant responsibility for a business area, and partners can also hold other functions such as compliance oversight. We’ll help you map functions to the partnership structure.
Do you provide interim compliance or risk cover?
Yes. Our fractional and interim SMF cover can bridge a vacancy while the permanent search runs.
Who owns the ICARA at board level?
The governing body is expected to own the ICARA, with finance and risk leaders supporting it. We recruit the people who make that ownership credible.
